Kelsey Yates is a journalist based in Calgary, Alberta, who graduated from SAIT Polytechnic in April 2016.

Her lifelong love of both writing and reading led her to a career in journalism. She loves to meet new people through her work and turn their words into interesting stories. At SAIT, Kelsey volunteered at the student-run paper, The Weal, as her first real experience in the field.

After graduation, she interned as a multimedia reporter for six months at the Strathmore Standard weekly newspaper. At the Standard, Kelsey was responsible for developing story ideas relevant to the community, photographing people and events, scheduling and conducting interviews, and writing and editing concise stories within tight deadlines. It was an eye-opening experience for her to get to know a small town on such a personal level and work with a tightly-knit team of reporters. She spent a lot of time in Strathmore’s surrounding rural communities such as Rosebud, Carseland, and Gleichen. For four weeks, Kelsey was also the reporter providing coverage in the town of Hanna.

In 2017, Kelsey began freelancing for the Standard and the Airdrie Echo, another weekly newspaper part of the Postmedia Network in Alberta. After building a good rapport with the team in Strathmore, she was kept in mind to provide extra support and coverage when needed. She goes on location to report on events, capture photos and write a variety of stories for the news, sports, or arts and lifestyle sections. In the future, she hopes to expand and begin freelancing for more publications.

When she’s not working on her next article, Kelsey enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors with her husband, Shawn.
